A recent job at a workshop in Romania suggests that is no longer automatic. The car was a Volkswagen Touareg with the 3.0 V6 TDI and only about 120,000 km (75,000 miles) on the clock, yet the engine was worn in a way you would expect at four or five times that distance.

Why a modern diesel wears out early

Since the stricter Euro 6d-Temp rules of 2019, manufacturers have squeezed emissions down in every way they can: more exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), oil pumps that run at low flow until higher rpm and, above all, very thin oils. This Touareg is specified for 0W-30, which is close to water at a cold start.

Thin oil is not a problem on its own. It becomes a problem when it is changed every 30,000 km. By then it is badly degraded, and at every cold start it no longer gives the minimum film the bearings need. The result is wear everywhere: crankshaft and con-rod bearings, lifters, rocker arms, camshafts and sometimes the cylinder walls. The oil filter on this engine was full of metal particles.

What had to be replaced

All four camshafts (two per cylinder bank of the V6).

Intake manifolds, deep-cleaned and fitted with new gaskets.

All rocker arms, lifters and valves removed and inspected.

New main bearings and new bearings on all six connecting rods.

A new original crankshaft.

A new timing drive with guides and tensioners.

The owner first refused the crankshaft, the most expensive single part. The mechanics fitted new bearings on the old crank, turned it a few times by hand, and the fresh bearings were already scored. That settled the argument. After reassembly, with the valve train adjusted, intake refitted and dozens of connectors and sensors plugged back in, the Touareg started and passed the road test.

The workshop’s advice

If the manufacturer asks for an oil that starts with 0W, shorten the interval to 10,000 to 15,000 km (about 6,000 to 9,000 miles), whatever the service indicator says, and use a quality oil that meets the exact VW approval for the engine. The shop manager adds that this engine also holds a relatively small amount of oil, which ages faster. With 10,000 km changes he expects the first timing service and bearing check at around 200,000 km instead of a rebuild at 120,000.

You can see the whole job in the video below. The factory repair manual for your Touareg gives the oil specification and capacity for your engine code, every tightening torque and angle, the timing procedure with the special tools, and the wiring diagrams for the sensors you have to unplug on the way.

Our manuals are the manufacturer’s own service information for your VIN, delivered as a PDF with working hyperlinks: click a step in the index, or a connector in a wiring diagram, and you go straight to it.
