Ford unveiled the fourth-generation Expedition at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2017. It went on sale as a 2018 model and is still built today, refreshed for 2022. Here is what changed from the previous truck.

Lighter, bigger

Like the F-150, the new Expedition got an aluminum-alloy body. Despite growing, it lost up to about 300 lb (136 kg). The front end drew on the Lincoln Navigator, while the side profile sits close to its main rival, the Chevrolet Tahoe. Wheels range from 17 to 22 inches.

The long-wheelbase model was renamed from Expedition EL to Expedition Max. Its wheelbase stayed the same, while the standard model’s wheelbase grew by about 3 inches (76 mm).

One engine, ten speeds

The only engine at launch was the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, paired with a 10-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive were offered, the 4×4 with a two-speed transfer case and an electronic limited-slip rear differential. Auto Start-Stop became standard, and maximum towing rose to about 9,300 lb (around 4,200 kg).

Inside

The dashboard is closely related to the F-150’s. The Expedition seats up to eight, with SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a B&O Play audio system with 12 speakers, a panoramic roof and six USB ports. A new Advanced Cargo Manager adds a shelf system in the cargo area.

Servicing a 2018 or newer Expedition

The 3.5 EcoBoost cam phasers and timing chains, the 10-speed automatic, the two-speed transfer case and the independent rear suspension are the jobs owners ask about most. The factory service manual for your Expedition, built for your VIN, gives the exact procedures, fluid specs and torque values for your drivetrain, plus the wiring diagrams.

Our manuals are the manufacturer’s own service information for your VIN, delivered as a PDF with working hyperlinks: click a step in the index, or a connector in a wiring diagram, and you go straight to it. No scanned pages, no guessing.
