When Ford unveiled the fourth-generation F-Series Super Duty in September 2015, it called it the toughest, most capable Super Duty ever. The trucks went on sale as 2017 models and stayed in production through 2022. Here is what changed, and what it means for owners working on these trucks today.

Aluminum body, steel frame

Like the F-150 before it, the new F-250, F-350 and F-450 got a military-grade aluminum-alloy body, saving up to about 350 lb (158 kg). The fully boxed frame is new and, according to Ford, up to 24 times stiffer than before, with about 95% high-strength steel.

The design is dominated by the C-shaped headlamps around a big horizontal grille and huge towing mirrors. All lighting is LED. Inside came SYNC 3 with an 8-inch screen and a multifunction cluster, plus adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, lane-keeping and up to seven cameras around the truck.

Engines

  • 6.2L gasoline V8
  • 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8
  • 6.8L gasoline V10 (chassis cab models)

For the 2018 model year Ford reworked the 6.7 Power Stroke’s block and raised output to 450 hp and 935 lb-ft. That made the F-450 4×2 able to conventionally tow up to 34,000 lb (about 15.4 tonnes) with a gooseneck, 1,500 lb more than before and a class record at the time. Starting price was $52,830.

Aluminum panels need their own repair procedures, rivets and bonding. The 6.7 Power Stroke, the 10-speed automatic introduced later in this generation, trailer brake controllers and the camera systems all have model-year differences. The factory service manual for your truck is built for your VIN, so it shows the engine, transmission and options your Super Duty actually has, with torque specs, diagnostic procedures and the full wiring diagrams.

Our manuals are the manufacturer’s own service information for your VIN, delivered as a PDF with working hyperlinks: click a step in the index, or a connector in a wiring diagram, and you go straight to it. No scanned pages, no guessing.
