The owner of a well-known Romanian workshop bought a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4MOTION with a seven-speed DSG from a friend. It had 73,500 km (about 45,700 miles) and a full service history, much of it done in his own shop. Two weeks later the gearbox threw a clutch position fault.

Diagnosis

The fault code pointed to clutch position. There are two sensors in that area of the mechatronic unit (the gearbox’s hydraulic and electronic control module), and they are a known weak point. To find out whether new sensors would be enough, the mechatronic unit has to come out.

The team removed and opened it and showed the two sensors. Dealers only replace the complete unit. Independent shops can replace the sensors on their own, but it takes a careful hand. In this case the shop had an identical used mechatronic unit, so they fitted it and programmed it.

The ghost error

After a short drive the same fault came back. When the data from the old unit was copied to the replacement, the stored faults were copied with it. Once these inherited errors were cleared manually, the gearbox shifted normally. The mechanic recommends driving at least 50 to 60 km after this kind of repair before calling it done.

Replacing just the sensors is the cheaper route for owners who do not want to pay around 1,700 euros for a new mechatronic unit, plus fluid and labour.

A note for North American owners

US and Canadian Tiguans use a conventional eight-speed automatic (six-speed on the first generation) rather than the DSG in this video. Diagnosing, removing and adapting the transmission control unit is still a factory-procedure job. The factory repair manual for your Tiguan covers the transmission fitted to your VIN, the fluid type and capacity, the control unit removal and the wiring diagrams for its sensors.

Our manuals are the manufacturer’s own service information for your VIN, delivered as a PDF with working hyperlinks: click a step in the index, or a connector in a wiring diagram, and you go straight to it. No scanned pages, no guessing.
